Construction of the Edmonton Temple

Series 9 - ... Renovations, Summer and Autumn of 2011

• - Temple renovations 2011 - The first week. The tear out begins (mid-July 2011).

• - Other cladding is being removed also.

• - Portico column cladding is gone, as are the tiered gardens and walls.

• - The portico supporting columns are exposed; and the underside of the portico roof is being readied.

• - The flowers and shrubs on the North grounds are as beautiful and peaceful as ever (late July).

• - The tiered garden walls have been completely dismantled along with the walkways (early August).

• - Jacks hold up the portico roof so it stays in place as the supporting columns are removed.

• - The patio bricks and remnants of the walkways and tiered garden walls are removed along with their encased rebar (steel reinforcing bars).

• - Footings are being poured in late August for the East wall and foundation of the new entryway.

• - The supporting columns are back in place holding up the portico roof. Additional footings and uprights have been poured.

• - Forms for the foundation of the platform are taking shape directly under the portico roof, and extending to the East.

• - In early September, Outer forms have been removed from one poured footing (center, left).

• - Rear form and rebar for the lower East wall take shape between the poured footings.

• - The lower East wall has been poured between the main footings, and the forms have been removed.

• - By mid-September, more of the platform foundation elements are in place.

• - Toward the end of September, the portico enclosure framing takes shape.

• - The lower forms and some of the rebar for the north stairs can be seen.

• - The view from the North shows the platform extending to the East (left) of the enclosed portico.

• - The rebar for the main slab of the platform is being prepared.

• - 29 Sept 2011 - The day of the BIG POUR. The forms and rebar for the main slab of the platform are readied.

• - The top tier of the North bulkhead is finished. It will keep the platform concrete at the top of the staircase.

• - The concrete pumping truck arrives.

• - And unfolds like a giant praying mantis to start the pour at the south end of the platform.

• - The concrete arrives right on schedule.

• - The pour rounds the Southeast corner of the portico.

• - Working to the North, the concrete is nearly all in place.

• - The platform slab is poured and smoothed.

• - Early in October, the portico enclosure is nearly complete.

• - By the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, the planter walls along the East platform wall have been poured.

• - The forms are nearly ready for the foundation of the North stairs.

• - The planter wall North of the stairs has also been poured (foreground, right).

• - The South stairs are also ready to pour.

• - The roadway brickwork has been removed, and the foundation has been cut.

• - The North stairs have their forms removed, and they are ready for stone.

• - The South stairs are similarly ready.

• - By October's end the roadbed foundation is leveled and the portico exterior sheeting has largely been installed.

• - Rebar is in place for the foundations of the roadbed and the walkway. The portico is shrouded.

• - The rebar for the walkway at the foot of the South stairs and for the roadbed are similarly readied.

• - On the North face, the art glass windows near the baptistry are being readied for replacement.

• - The expanded shrouds now enclose the portico, the platform and the North stairs.

• - The roadway in front of the new entryway is ready for paving stone.

• - The transit mix truck delivers the concrete for the wheel chair ramp abutments, and roadway stringers.

• - The last roadway stringer and the wheel chair ramp abutments are poured at the foot of the South stairs.

• - The North side wheel chair ramp abutments and the first walkway stringer are poured and finished.

• - By mid-november, near project completion, the paving stones are in place on the roadway.

• - Temporary framed barrier fencing is erected on the North side.

• - Iron fencing and railings are delivered.

• - Art glass windows are delivered for the North side windows, and perhaps for the portico.

• - Access opening in the North side shrouding.

• - Stone for the platform, stairs and planters can be seen in the access opening.

• - The North wheel chair ramp will be the temporary main entrance at re-opening (29 Nov 2011).

• - The temporary enclosure now has framed East and North walls.

• - The South walkway paving stones are in place.

• - The temporary entry gateway is identified for patrons.

• - The North wheel chair ramp is readied for temporary patron use.

• - The new front entrance doors are still wrapped prior to temple re-opening.

• - The replacement art glass windows will be fitted into their openings near the baptistry.

• - Two art glass windows are in place, ... one to go before the re-opening on 29 Nov 2011.

• - The taller view of the art glass windows installation.

• - The stone for the South stairs, planters, etc., is delivered.

• - The wet saw for cutting the stone is in place.

• - The temporary entryway at the top of the North wheel chair ramp is marked on the unfinished North portico wall exterior.

• - All three art glass windows are placed in their frames.

• - Weather protection shrouds are extended to enclose the South stairs, etc.

• - Worker cuts stone for the South stairs, planters, etc.
